The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) criticized the policy taken by Ministry of Law and Human Rights to award remissions or cutbacks of prison time for 1,938 from a total of 2,786 corruption convicts which will undermine the deterrent effect in an extraordinary crime.

Chairwoman of the Selection Panel for Leadership of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), Destry Damayanti, acknowledged that there still candidates having questionable track records among the remaining 19 candidates that have passed previous selection phases.

Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW), one of the oldest anti-corruption organisations in Indonesia, recently marked 17 years(link is external) of fighting abuse of power by government officials. ICW was born at the end of the New Order era, inspired by the movement to topple Soeharto, an authoritarian leader who had used his position to enrich his family and cronies.

A small child read a poetry about Dreams of Indonesian Children in front of President Joko Widodo during ceremonies to commemorate the 70th year of independence at the state palace, Istana Merdeka, yesterday. “I'm proud, but I have dreams about Indonesia in the future. I dream that 10 years from now, corruption will no longer exist in Indonesia.”

Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) revealed that they had obtained noteworthy facts, including suspicious indications, regarding some of the remaining 48 names still competing for the leadership of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), who have passed the previous selection rounds. ICW noted they are not ready to release the details since their tracking activities are still underway.

In the trails of his involvement on bribery currently under investigation by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), Governor of North Sumatera Gatot Pujo Nugroho is also accused by the Interior Ministry of abusing his authority. It was revealed that in last February the Ministry had informed Gatot regarding a special examination regarding the case.
