Anti-Corruption Weekly Digest: Update 2015/6/1-4

Summary

On June 1st, 2015, there were five events related to anti-corruption agenda. First, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) conducted an internal evaluation related to three (3) defeats in pretrial against corruption suspects. The Commission insists that the lex-specialist status must be respected by other parties, including the judges. Secondly, Vice President, Jusuf Kalla urged the Commission to take the investigator originated from the Police and the Attorney. Thirdly, the Commission is urged to immediately ask LHKPN (State Officials Wealth Reports) of the Criminal Police Headquarters, Budi Waseso. As known earlier, Budi Waseso declined to report LHKPN and challenged the Commission to investigate his property. Fourth, Attorney General will immediately improve the status of corruption cases involving 57 (fifty seven) Regional Head to the prosecution stage. And fifth, the Judicial Commission urged addressing alleged ethical violations committed by the pretrial judges in the case of Hadi Purnomo and Budi Gunawan.

On June 3, 2015, there were five (5) events of public concern in the anti-corruption agenda. First, Vice President Jusuf Kalla is deemed not pro to anti-corruption agenda, due to his stance of Head of Criminal Police Headquarters for not reporting LHKPN. Secondly, the Commission plans to make an appeal against the pretrial verdict in the case of Hadi Purnomo. Thirdly, the Commission put forward 17 criteria to the Selection Committee of KPK. KPK leaders have given the study and the criteria of an ideal leader of KPK in the future. Fourth, the Attorney General will conduct an internal evaluation of the acquittal of the Irianto MS Syafiuddin, former Regent of Indramayu. The prosecutor confirmed that it will appeal the verdict. And fifth, Miranda Gultom has been released after serving three years imprisonment. She was convicted of bribery to members of parliament who sold their votes to her as a senior deputy of Central Bank.

On June 4, 2015, there were three (3) events related to anti-corruption agenda. First, the Attorney General, Muhammad Prasetyo, said that the Commission could conduct re-investigation on the case of Hadi Purnomo and Ilham who has been released by the pretrial judge. He asserted that the Commission does not need to bestow the cases to other law enforcement agencies. KPK only need to issue a new warrant investigation. Second, the pretrial hearing filed by Novel Baswedan against the Police Headquarters, he bringing 77 evidences to fend off accusations of police. And third, because of corruption on confiscated corruption, the staff of Attorney sentenced to 15 years imprison. The verdict was welcomed anti-corruption activists, because according to the records, the average sentence for corruption cases is only 2-3 years in prison.

Important Development

June 1st: the KPK has conducted an evaluation of three defeats in pretrial.
June 3rd:

  • Attorney General will evaluate the acquittal verdict of former Indramayu Regent, Irianto MS Syafiuddin.

  • Miranda Gultom has been released after serving three years imprisonment.

  • The KPK proposed 17 criteria to the Selection Committee of KPK.
    June 4th: Denpasar District Court sentenced 15 years imprison for staff of Attorney after convicted committing corruption on the confiscated of corruption.
