“KPK Names Makassar Mayor a suspect, again”

In what is clearly a KPK effort to address mounting pre-trials against it, the agency issued a new “sprindik”, again declaring the former Makassar Mayor Ilham Arief Sirajuddin a suspect. This follows a loss on procedural grounds in a pre-trial notion last month in regards to the same case.

In the pretrial ruling against Novel Baswedan, yesterday, Judge Zuhairi was deemed to have ignored all evidence and testimony of witnesses and experts presented by Novel's legal team. One of the key pieces of ignored evidence was a letter from KPK chair which explains that Novel was unable to attend the examination since he was on duty. Less weighty reasons for not attending hearings have commonly been used and found no objection.

Former President Director of Pertamina, Karen Agustiawan was questioned for four hours by the Police Criminal Investigation Unit as part of an investigation into a joint project between state-owned enterprises such as Pertamina, PGN, Pelindo, Hutama Karya, Askes, and BRI. The Corporate Social Responsibility budget was allegedly used to fund a fictitious project.

The KPK Selection Commission is currently seeking candidates for KPK leaders from a wide range of backgrounds. The purpose of this is to strengthen corruption efforts to reach broader domains, including import-export, budget allocation and expenditure, tax income, money laundering, and asset forfeiture of corruption convicts. While the KPK law requires Commissioner candidates to possess a law degree, a variety of experiences would certainly be an asset to KPK.
